President Museveni between a hardrock save lives or Livelihoods. FilePhoto
I have take time to listen to a number of addresses the president has been delivering to our nation.
I have took time to listen to some opinions of my learned friends since the pandemic broke out, from Ugandan, African to European Politicians, the computer scientists, the cryptographer to robotics enginers of MIT, the great doctors of Califonia to Israel, the respected brains of the west from Elon Musk, to Jac Ma, the philanthropist class of Bill Gates, John Macafe and from my local town neighbours to village stars in my deep surb of Lusaka in Hoima Municipality.
In the early days of the pandemic the UN business arm UNCTAD experts said the pandemic is expected to cost the whole world 1 trillion dollars and more, is this healthy in terms of economics? This is why i partly believe Africans are poor because they spend most of their incomes are spent on health expenses. Such unhealthy society will breed unproductive society. There has never been a time when the whole world has ever been unproductive like today in these world over country lockdown. (This is unhealthy).
Record financial experts warned of a great economic recession. Robert Kyosaki of the Rich Dad Poor Dad one of the America’s financial record selling book in his publication said this gonna be one of the greatest recession the world has ever had. Economist or even maybe politicians are focused to livelihoods and health paractioners, humanitarians or even leaders are curious to save people’s lives.
President Museveni in one of his Corona Virus address was attracted to clarify on a point he said had took most people’s attention at floor of parliament, that the economy is collapsing but he strong heartedly told off critics “It’s n’t, he further clarified that, though some sectors are hit hard but as a country is progressing in manufacturing sector, agriculture etc, he cited out a situation of a company that was manufacturing sanitizers in Uganda that was just one but the trade ministry cleared more than 30 other new companies venturing in the sanitizers business (meaning exportation to neighbouring countries). However, his emphasise seemed to side with the handling of a pandemic than focusing on economics because to me though he manourvered hard to created holes in the critic’s base of analysis but he could not bring out a real point in terms of individual livelihoods. His mind tells him that atleast let someone be poor but be alive, here he choose to be a leader than being a politician. He did not differ much with one african leader who said “We know how to recover an economy but we do not know how to bring back someone to life.
In the assessment, president Museveni in other words agreed with his critics that, the economy was on a very high speed going down but “this is survival, its between life and death” as he always would say in his addresses.
In an article written by a physician and an MIT researcher in AI they were looking on a possible way to create answers on how to use big data to curb down the virus so business can get back to normal. How can we leverage on computer data. For example, a doctor tests a patient with the virus, how would a computer scientists help a doctor know the victim’s immediate contacts in the last given number of days. With this target isolation we maybe able to re-open schools, markets, airlines extra. This way we are choosing lives first but creating room for business to thrive.
Applaud to the experts from multiple European nations who are working around the clock developing an open source decentralised Pan-European Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing initiative (PEPP-PT), i believe would be based on either Blockchain, Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) or Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).
Pan European Privacy-Preserving Proximity Tracing initiative (PEPP-PT) is to provide a complete framework and reference implementation to track and stop the transmission of COVID-19 rapidly and effectively.
The aim is to inform the relevant contacts of infected cases as quickly as possible about the possibility of infection, in order for the right measures to be taken in a timely manner by relevant health and maybe security authorities. (pepp-pt.org).
Working Environment visa vie Economy.
In this era we a getting lessons, we are being taught the hard way that there are possible ways of working remotely and if are not their in some instances we are forced to think up new approaches. Its even true some tasks we could execute physically before did not need your physicality. With this, we may save lives by social distancing and staying at the same time saving money we could incur to be physical in a place to accomplish a task you could accomplish remotely.
In early days of the epidemic in the USA, facebook sent hundreds of content moderators home. The policy of Facebook was moderators had a room where they could go in without any gadget that could store data, perhaps a facebook user data but when the virus hit some trusted ones were allowed work at home but others stopped working. Facebook was then forced to speed up their efforts to employ artificial intelligence (AI) in content moderation. Though the tool was far from employment but efforts were doubled if not trippled, so after the AI tool is done and employed, these people would have lost their jobs.
A local hotel in China is using robots to serve people or help people in hand washing because its the best way to deal with the virus, present to it robots, a robot is not a harm. So stay home the robots will handle work, remember before those jobs belonged to some humans. The question is, Will someone who needs a pay rise, promotions, day offs compete with a robot who needs non of those? Jobs are gone. Not healthy.
A factory in China is becoming a dark factory, automation and robots are sustaining labour in the virus era. Dark factory needs no light because the robots have night vision. Its arguably true for a factory owner later after to opt for a machine than human at most of the production stages as we fulfil the stay home, so we stay safe campaign. As a robotic engineer is inventing a robot that would fit your shoes while at home he is saving lives but creating room for livelihoods in one way or the other.
Its true life can’t sustained life, and livelihood is worthless if their is no lives, but a livelihood sustains life. A local single mother who was a shop keeper in Masaka town will lack food or water in the ongoing lockdown, she is home saving her life together with the Kid’s but trust me a livelihood is the only password to sustain them.
I still believe the two are twins, as twins are given birth too in a single day but not at ago, their is always the first in our Bunyoro Culture Isingoma or Nyangoma comes first that is either life or livehoods it depends on what you think and Kato or Nyakato comes last that is life or livelihoods depending on what you believe in but to a parent all are kids and should share your love. But choosing between the two in terms of this scenario, you are either a leader (live) or a politician (livelihoods). President Museveni is stuck somewhere “Otagicumba otagyokya, baitu nsange ehiire” literally meaning do not cook it or roast it but i want it cooked.
With a few examples in job market and technological changes we are facing economy collapse, according to available data in only 4 months employees have dropped their employement rate by about 50 %, only in the USA the coronavirus economic freeze could cost 47 million jobs and send the unemployment rate past 32%, according to St. Louis Fed projections. By march 21, 3.3 m Americans had filled for joblessness and by today about 6 to 7 Americans are jobless. This is not healthy what about Uganda, all the country locked down. We exprienced the 2008 / 2009 recession without a lockdown. If you want to know a recession is on go down to the middle class in Kampala, Hoima, Mabarara, Fort portal extra, the farmers will fill the heat later after.
The technological advancement (digital transformation/ Fourth industrial revolution) catalysed by the great 2019 pandemic will not win over humans but its effects has ignited and will continue to fuel the great recession.
Transition and adoption, the time it will take people to adopt, get used and incomporated in the digital economy, new behaviours like keeping high standards of hygiene, cashless economy, it will determine the world’s economy boom again. The more we delay in adaptation the more recession will take. Yes the transition always affects societies, Europeans were scared to death to transit from slave trade to steam engines and industrial revolution but see how mechanisation eased production. We have a brighter future if out country believe in technology than even oil. Uganda needs more Blockchain, Robotics or Digital software developer engineers than those of oil. Check oil prices in comparision to Amazon, Alibaba, Facebook, wechat pay or Tesla stock.
